Shared accommodation rate

In one sentence

The lower Local Housing Allowance rate for most single private tenants under 35.

Care leavers under 25, and under-25s who have spent at least three months in a homeless hostel, can claim the one-bedroom rate instead. The care leaver exemption was extended to age 25 on 31 May 2021.

Local Housing Allowance (LHA)The flat-rate limit on help with rent for private tenants, set for each area and property size. It does not apply to exempt accommodation.

Where it comes up

Transitional housing and move-onTransitional housing is time-limited supported accommodation that helps someone get from crisis to a settled home. Stays usually run from six months to two years. The service only works if move-on planning starts at the first meeting, with a realistic destination, the steps to get there and named people responsible for each one.
